5 Common Misconceptions

Product design has been a hot topic lately. It is not only one of the most sought out professions of the moment but also a very interesting and creative one.

There are however many misconceptions about product design that people get.

1. Product design is all about designing gadgets and cool items you never knew you needed.

While designing cool gadgets is certainly part of product design, this industry is in fact much more complex. Product design is about solving problems in ingenious ways. There are four types of product design: Industrial design, system design, process design, and interface design.

2. Product designers come up with great ideas and then find sponsors to get prototypes built.

This statement might have been true years ago but in most cases nowadays product designers work in efficient teams within companies. They are presented with a problem by their clients and they need to come up with a solution in the form of an ingenious product. Others choose to enter competitions and get their ideas into the world.

3. Product design is all about aesthetics.

Yes, we all love to see beautiful things but product design is about creating a good user experience, and to do that, functionally and aesthetics need to go hand in hand.

4. A good product will be appreciated by everyone.

Product design is about providing a solution to a problem but not all solutions are the same. Design is always subjective and as such, some people are going to love one product while others will not. It is all part of the design industry.

5. Product design is all about inventing something new.

Inventing something new is certainly incredible but product design is about more than just presenting the world with an invention. It is about presenting users with a solution instead. This might be a solution integrated within an existing gadget or a solution presented as something completely new and unseen before.

All in all, product design is a very interesting industry. It involves a complexity of ideas and processes to ultimately make the world a better place to live in!
